Really unsure about this one...I fought with his eyes for quite sometime. I kind of used a reference, but I ended up wandering away from it due to the model looking completely different... What do you guys think?
This picture just looks...weird, to me, like you were trying to give Link a different look than normal, but you didn't quite know what you were going for. What's odd to me is that he looks about 35-40 years old, much older than any canon appearance, and that doesn't seem to be what you were trying to do, so it just looks a bit odd. (If that is what you were trying to do, disregard this next bit) There are a number of factors contributing to this (a more angular jawline than usual, small eyes, large nose), but the biggest one is the wrinkles on the side of the nose and lips. Yes, actual people tend to have those lines, but when you're drawing a young character, you have to be extremely careful with wrinkles and lines, because even small subtle ones can age someone up in a hurry.
The rest of the picture is pretty good. I like the dabs of blue along the left, it adds some nice tones. There's some anatomy issues with the left ear and the connection between the hair and the scalp, and Navi looks oddly geometrical compared to the rest of the drawing being more rounded and organic. And if you really don't want to spend any more time on the background, and least change the midground to a more natural color. That gray-purple just sticks out-it looks like an oil spill or something. I'd recommend maybe a muted yellowish-green to look like a grassland.
Even though I could agree he kind of looks 'weird', at the same same time I kind of don't.
Its just link, but maybe a little older/realistic than you normally see him portrayed. I think its all about the difficult angle you chose, which makes his head seem wider and features like his nose and lips get a little exaggerated. I think it looks cool and the shading is almost perfect. I don't see anything wrong with the eyes, but that could be just me.
The only thing thats bothering me really is that navi looks kind of... pasted on, because you used a completely different style to make her. But still, that's just my opinion and that could be completely different from your goal with this picture. xD
I was originally going for an older and more realistic link. I think people are too used to seeing him young and "pretty" YES, I need to fix Navi xD I got some Zelda brushes and I was really lazy at the last second and pasted Navi on...must fix that >.<;
I agree with the critique by Jupiter. I gotta add in though: Some of the shading looks off. Navi is on his right shoulder and produces light there, but his left shoulder and side is also lit up. Judging by her position, I'd say she's more slightly behind/corner of the eye position than foreword enough to give his left ear and far shoulder and hat a shine.
I like the slightly different take, the only thing I don't lke are... you guessed it... the eyes.. it's the odd line right through the middle of each pupil area. love how you did navi, I like the fact that he looks just a bit older than usual.
